Vocal range test

Quick answer

To find your vocal range, press Start, sing your lowest comfortable note, then glide up to your highest comfortable note. The tool tracks your pitch from the microphone in real time and shows your range in note names such as A2–E4, an estimated voice type (bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano or soprano) and how many semitones to shift a song so it fits. It is free and the audio never leaves your device.

Microphone audio is analysed on this device only. It is not recorded or uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Use headphones or a quiet room, and hold your phone or laptop about an arm's length away.
  2. Press Start and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  3. Sing an 'ah' on your lowest comfortable note and hold it for about a second, then slide slowly up to your highest comfortable note and hold that too.
  4. Read your range, then enter a song's highest note to see how many semitones to lower or raise it.

Honest limitations

  • The result is your comfortable range today with this microphone, not a professional voice classification. Warm-up, time of day and technique all change it.
  • Voice type is estimated from range alone. Teachers also listen to timbre, passaggio and where your voice sounds best, which software cannot judge.
  • Background noise, music playing nearby or a very breathy sound can produce missed or wrong notes. A note only counts after it is held briefly.
  • Falsetto and whistle notes are counted if they are steady, so decide yourself whether you would use them in a song.

Privacy: your audio never leaves your device

This tool runs entirely in your browser with the Web Audio API. Microphone input and the files you open are analysed in memory on your own device. Nothing is uploaded to MR Maker or any other server, nothing is recorded, and closing the tab discards everything.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal vocal range?

Most untrained adults comfortably sing about one and a half octaves, and trained singers often reach two octaves or more. Typical male ranges sit around E2–E4 to C3–C5, and typical female ranges around F3–F5 to C4–C6.

How accurate is this vocal range test?

Pitch detection is accurate to a few cents on a clear, steady note. The weak point is the input: room noise, clipping or very quiet singing can hide notes. Test twice and keep the range you can repeat.

Can this test tell me if I am a tenor or a baritone?

It gives an estimate based on where your range sits. Voice classification also depends on timbre and where your voice changes register, so treat the label as a starting point and confirm it with a voice teacher.

How do I use my range to choose a song key?

Compare the song's highest note with your highest comfortable note. If the song goes higher, lower the key by the difference, ideally keeping one semitone of headroom. The calculator below the result does this for you.

Why does the test need microphone permission?

It has to hear you to measure your pitch. The audio is analysed in memory in your browser and is never recorded, saved or uploaded. You can revoke permission at any time in your browser settings.

Can I expand my vocal range?

Regular, healthy practice can make your top and bottom notes easier and more consistent over weeks and months. Never force notes that hurt; take the test again later to track progress.

Once you know how far to shift a song, MR Maker can remove the vocals from a track you upload and change the key of the instrumental. It is a paid, credit-based service, and the cost is shown before you start.
