Key changer: change a song's key without changing the tempo

Quick answer

Open an audio file, choose how many semitones to move it (from −6 to +6) and press Change key. The tool shifts the pitch in your browser with a phase vocoder, keeps the original tempo and length, lets you compare the original and the result, and saves the new version as a WAV file. It is free, needs no account and the audio is never uploaded. A transposition chart shows which key you will end up in.

How to use it

  1. Press Choose audio file and pick a song on your device.
  2. Set the shift: negative numbers lower the key, positive numbers raise it. One semitone is one piano key.
  3. Choose the whole file or a 60-second excerpt, then press Change key and wait for the progress bar.
  4. Compare the original and shifted versions, then download the WAV if you like the result.

Honest limitations

  • Pitch shifting changes vocals as well as instruments, so a shifted singer can sound slightly unnatural, especially beyond ±4 semitones.
  • Large shifts add a soft, phasey colour to drums and reverb. Smaller shifts sound cleaner.
  • Long files take time and memory on older phones; use the 60-second excerpt or a computer for full songs.
  • The download is an uncompressed WAV, so files are larger than the original MP3.

Privacy: your audio never leaves your device

This tool runs entirely in your browser with the Web Audio API. Microphone input and the files you open are analysed in memory on your own device. Nothing is uploaded to MR Maker or any other server, nothing is recorded, and closing the tab discards everything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the key of a song without changing the tempo?

Open the song here, choose the number of semitones and press Change key. The tool uses time-stretching and resampling so the pitch moves while the speed and length stay the same.

How many semitones should I shift?

Use the difference between the song's highest note and your highest comfortable note. Many singers lower a song by 1–3 semitones when the chorus feels strained, and men covering songs written for female voices often lower them by 3–5. The vocal range test can calculate it for you.

Does changing the key reduce audio quality?

A little. Shifts of 1–3 semitones usually sound natural; larger shifts can add a slightly metallic or phasey quality. The result is saved as WAV so no extra compression is added.

Can I change the key of a YouTube video here?

No. This tool works only with audio files on your own device that you have the right to use. It does not download from YouTube or other websites.

Will the vocals be removed?

No, this tool shifts the whole mix. If you need an instrumental without the vocals, MR Maker's paid AI vocal remover can separate them and change the key of the backing track.

Is the key changer free and private?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and processing happens entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Need a backing track in your key?

This free tool shifts the full mix, vocals included. To get the instrumental only, upload the song to MR Maker: the paid AI vocal remover separates the vocals, and you can change the key of the backing track as part of the same job. Credits are used per conversion and the cost is shown first.
