About this song

Horatio Spafford wrote this text in 1873. His wife and four daughters had sailed ahead of him on the SS Ville du Havre, which sank after colliding with the Loch Earn; only his wife survived. The singing evangelist Philip Bliss set the words and named the tune after the lost ship. Bliss and Ira Sankey first printed the hymn in Gospel Hymns No. 2 in 1876, the same year Bliss died in the Ashtabula rail disaster. Hymnary.org gives the tune in C major, moving in 4/4.

Rights
