How many keys should I lower a wedding song?

Short answer

Lower a wedding song only until your highest chorus note feels safe without a warm-up. A practical starting point is 1–2 semitones below the key you can only just manage. Go further only if the lowest verse note still sounds clear, and test the exact backing track at performance volume.

Explanation

One key step is one semitone. Lowering by 2 moves the whole song down a whole tone, so the lowest verse note drops by the same amount as the highest chorus note.

A ceremony is harder than rehearsal: you rarely get to warm up loudly, and nerves shorten your breath. The top note you can hit only on a good day is the first thing to wobble, so choose a key that leaves margin there.

A microphone can lift quiet low notes, but not notes you cannot produce. Aim for the key where most of the song sits in your comfortable middle range (tessitura).

How to choose the key

  1. Record the highest chorus line and the lowest verse line before warming up.
  2. Sing the same lines at -1 and -2 and keep the key with the most margin.
  3. Make the backing track in that key (MR Maker supports -6 to +6) and put the key in the filename.
  4. Rehearse the whole song through speakers at a venue-like volume.

Frequently asked questions

Is one karaoke key the same as one semitone?

Yes. Each key step is a semitone, so -2 lowers the song by a whole tone.

Does lowering the key make the backing track sound worse?

Shifts of one or two semitones usually sound natural. Larger shifts can make piano or cymbals sound less natural, so listen to the full shifted file.

Whose voice decides the key for a duet?

Usually the singer with the least top-note margin. The other singer can switch octave or take a harmony line.

How do I make a lowered wedding backing track?

Upload audio you are authorized to use, choose a quality and a key. On MR Maker conversion costs 1 to 3 credits, plus 1 credit for a key change.

Make a backing track from your own file

Upload an audio file you are authorized to use (MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG or MP4, up to 50MB). Conversion costs 1, 2 or 3 credits for low, medium or high quality; changing the key adds 1 credit.
