How do I remove vocals from a song on iPhone?

Short answer

For songs in Apple Music, Apple Music Sing lowers the vocal volume on iPhone 11 or later with iOS 16.2 or later, but it gives you no file to keep. For a backing-track file, upload a song you are authorized to use to a browser-based vocal remover in Safari, then save the result to Files.

Explanation

Apple Music Sing is for Apple Music subscribers and works with select songs. In the Music app's Now Playing screen you open the lyrics, then touch and hold the Sing control and drag the slider to adjust the vocal level. It is a playback feature inside the Music app.

Logic Pro for iPad includes Stem Splitter, which extracts vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano and other parts into separate regions. Apple lists it for iPads with an M1 or later chip, so it is not an iPhone option.

A web vocal remover works in Safari with audio files you already have in the Files app. MR Maker accepts MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG and MP4 files up to 50MB and returns a downloadable backing track.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export the Apple Music Sing version?

Apple's guide describes Sing as a vocal-volume control during playback in the Music app; it does not describe an export option.

Can I upload songs downloaded from a streaming app?

Usually not: streaming downloads are protected files for that app. Use audio files you own or are authorized to process.

Does GarageBand on iPhone remove vocals?

In the Apple documentation we checked, stem splitting is described for Logic Pro for iPad, not GarageBand for iPhone.

Make a backing track from your own file

Upload an audio file you are authorized to use (MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG or MP4, up to 50MB). Conversion costs 1, 2 or 3 credits for low, medium or high quality; changing the key adds 1 credit.
